Life often resembles a rollercoaster, doesn't it? Balancing obligations, encountering unforeseen difficulties, and handling everyday pressures can result in significant stress. For me, this emotional burden manifested physically, mainly as persistent jaw tension. It wasn't until I came across somatic yoga and breathwork that I experienced genuine relief.
The Burden of Stress and Jaw Pain
For years, I dealt with tightness in my jaw. At first, I brushed it off as a typical consequence of a busy lifestyle and going through separation and divorce. However, as days turned into months, the discomfort escalated. I realized this clenching was more than just a nuisance; it reflected my emotional turmoil.
As a yoga teacher, you might think the answer would be in my practice, but that was not the case. My jaw tension was so severe that I would wake in the morning, the tension would be so intense that I felt like I had a hangover. By luck, I found relief when I took a 20-hour somatic yoga teacher training after just one class my jaw tension was gone. It felt like a miracle. That is when I was convinced of the power of somatic yoga and breathwork. It intrigued me, so I decided to dive deeper into these practices.
Discovering Somatic Yoga
Somatic yoga emphasizes the connection between the mind and body, and the repatterning of muscle movements. Unlike traditional yoga, which can often feel intimidating, or not mirror your movements. Somatic yoga encourages natural and intuitive movement and reaffirms the mind-muscle connection.
During my first practice of my somatic teacher training, I had no idea what to expect. In the first portion of the class, we focused on resetting the nervous system, through eye movement and humming that sounded like "vous"ing and then a few spine articulations. The final portion was a luxurious savasana that included a 61-point meditation. As I rose from that experience I noticed that my jaw tension was gone. I was amazed. The subsequent practices in the teacher training deepened the mind-body connection and release long-held tension.
The Transformative Power of Breathwork
Breathwork emerged as another crucial asset in my stress-relief toolkit. When anxiety creeps in, we often breathe shallowly. In contrast, deep, mindful breathing can trigger a relaxation response in our bodies.
One breathwork technique I gravitated towards is the “4-7-8” technique. This involves inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 7 counts, and exhaling for 8 counts. After a few repetitions, I noticed a distinct shift. My mind felt clearer, and the tension in my jaw began to loosen.
Furthermore, I learned to carve out moments throughout my day for this practice. Even brief sessions make a difference.
Merging the Practices
When I teach yoga I always integrate breath techniques into my yoga classes, focusing on the breath helps with staying in the present and letting go of tension.
The combination deepened my understanding of my body. I became more attuned to not only my jaw but tension present in my shoulders, neck, and back. As I progressed, I experienced a significant reduction in jaw tension.
Practical Tips for Stress Relief Through Breathwork and Somatic Yoga
If you're experiencing stress-related tension, I highly recommend trying the methods that worked for me. Here are some practical steps to include in your routine:
Set the Mood: Transform your space into a calming environment. Use soft lighting, play peaceful music, or add relaxing scents with essential oils.
Start Short: If new to yoga, ease into it with 10- to 15-minute sessions. You'll find yourself growing more comfortable over time.
Incorporate Breathwork: Use the “4-7-8” technique alongside yoga. Observe how it enhances your alignment and helps release tension.
Tune In: Remember, this journey is uniquely yours. If something feels off, modify or skip poses. Trust your body's signals.
Practice Consistently: Make this a daily habit. Just a few minutes can accumulate into significant progress.
Seek Support: Consider joining a community class or consulting with a specialist who can guide you through somatic practices. (refer to my private somatic sessions here)
